Normangate Field is an area lying between the River Nene and the villages of Ailsworth and Castor. Its importance as a Roman archaeological site was identified by early antiquarians such as Edmund Artis. Since then, periodic excavations have built a picture of the area as an important industrial suburb of the walled town of Durobrivae, specialising in pottery and iron making.
The first comprehensive geophysical survey of the area was carried out in early 2018. The geomagnetic survey was commissioned by the Nene Park Trust and undertaken by Durham University Archaeological Services. The results are stunning and are now available online from the Archaeological Data Service.
